Acne Treatments - how to control acne outbreaks.
Vitamins:
One of the oldest ways known to many to control our bodies natural balance and therefore skin conditon is by taking vitamins. While you may take a course of vitamins and still be susceptible to acne, not taking them is likely to increase the likely hood of an outbreak and the severity. During adolescence this a very important factor as a developing growing body is using more energy and vitamins that an adult. Vitamin A, B, C, D and E have all been linked with beneficial effects on complexion. Nourishing your body on the inside will be reflected on the exterior!
Over-the-counter products:
There are a great number of over the counter acne treatment products that can be bought in most pharmacies and retail stores. Non-prescription acne cleansers come in various types including, moisturizer, pimple cream and lotion. These and have varying success rates depending on the type and severity of the acne you are suffering from and the active ingredients. Some may contain active drugs in their ingredients while others are all natural. Since there is no guarantee that any, even a prescription will work be aware of the ingredients and the positive and negative effects you feel as this can help you chose another product with more knowledge and confidence. If you still have acne issues 4-6 weeks after starting any treatment, it may be time to start thinking of a new strategy.
Prescription gels, creams and lotions:
Most prescription products help fight acne by killing the bacteria infesting the pore. Side-effects can include dry, red skin. You will need to see a health care professional to get access to any of these products and due to the increase in potency of the active ingredients you should monitor closely for any adverse reactions. Always follow the instructions outlined on the packaging or by your he lath care professional.
Prescription oral antibiotics:
These should only be prescribed after a visit to your family doctor. Oral antibiotics are working to re-adjust your chemical/hormonal balance and can include some serious side-effects, such as nausea and dizziness. As above you must take this medication only as recommended.
Lasers Treatment
There are 2 types of acne treatment with lasers and light based systems. One inhibits the growth of the bacteria that is involved in acne lesions. The other shrinks the sebaceous oil glands that play a role in acne. Theses approaches can also decrease acne scaring. We will often use more than 1 laser or light based system to optimize the acne clearing benefits of these devices.
